Frequently asked questions
Does QuietCheck really detect smart glasses, trackers, drones, and hidden cameras?
It scans for Bluetooth signals known to be broadcast by specific hardware in those categories, and offers a heuristic camera-and-flashlight scan for possible hidden-camera lenses. All of it is approximate. See How Detection Works for the full explanation of what each method can and can't do.
Why does QuietCheck need Bluetooth access?
Bluetooth access is how QuietCheck listens for the publicly broadcast advertising signals that smart glasses, trackers, and drones send out. It's the same kind of signal any Bluetooth scanner app can see. QuietCheck never connects to, pairs with, or controls any device it detects; it only listens.
Why does QuietCheck need camera access?
Only for the optional Hidden Camera Check, which analyzes live camera frames on-device to look for a lens-glint reflection pattern. It only runs while that specific screen is open and scanning is active, never automatically and never in the background, and no image or video is ever recorded, saved, or transmitted.
Why does QuietCheck need location access?
Location access is entirely optional and off by default. If you turn on "Tag detections with location" in Settings, QuietCheck records an approximate location alongside future detections so you can review them on a map later. That location data stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. A separate toggle, also off by default, lets you contribute an anonymous +1 to a shared community sighting-density map.
Why does QuietCheck need calendar access?
Only if you turn on "Meeting mode" in Settings (off by default), which checks your calendar on-device for a current or upcoming meeting so QuietCheck can offer to start a scan automatically. Your calendar data is read on-device only and is never sent anywhere.
Is my data private?
Almost everything QuietCheck does happens entirely on your iPhone, with no network access at all. No analytics SDK, no ad SDK, no tracking of any kind. A handful of optional features do talk to a server (signature database sync, anonymous feedback, and the opt-in community map), and the Privacy page spells out exactly what each one sends.
Does QuietCheck work offline?
Yes. Every core feature (scanning, matching, notifying, history) works fully offline. The app tries once on launch to sync its signature database from our server and falls back silently to the bundled offline copy if that's unreachable for any reason.
Can QuietCheck be used to track or identify another person?
No. Every detection mechanism in QuietCheck is proximity-only by design. It can only detect what's physically near the phone it's running on, right now, and has no way to look up, locate, or monitor a specific device or person anywhere else.
Why did a notification not fire while my phone was locked or the app was in the background?
Background Bluetooth scanning is best-effort on iOS. The platform doesn't reliably deliver newly appearing device discoveries once an app is suspended, for the kind of broad scan QuietCheck has to run. A lack of an alert while backgrounded doesn't mean nothing was nearby.
